For the Machine is Immortal (and Portable)

For some reason, the idea of a Warhammer 40,000 mobile game seems weirdly unintuitive. Mobile games are supposed to be simple, brightly colored, and, above all else, casual, aren’t they? Stardew Valley gets a mobile port? Sure, makes sense. Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus gets a mobile port? We suddenly feel like we’ve stepped into an alternate dimension. Not that we’re complaining. It’s cool. Mechanicus tells the story of the Adeptus Mechanicus, AKA the Tech-Priests, and their quest to scour the planet of Silva Tenebris for ancient artifacts and lost technology. The downside is that most of these treasures are buried in Necron Tombs, and if there’s one thing you should never do in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, it’s willingly enter a Necron Tomb. So needless to say, you’ll be doing that a lot.

The press release states that: “Taking the role of the Tech-priest Dominus Faustinius, players must customise their team from a variety of troop types, disciplines and augments. They must then control their squad’s every move and manage vital resources on their epic journey through carefully hand-crafted missions to discover long-forgotten tech.” It goes on to add that the game includes: “strategic combat in which players will test their mettle under the extreme pressure of a Xenos ambush, every battle won and every tomb explored sees not just the threat increase but also the rewards for surviving. Collecting in-game achievements will unlock powerful abilities that can be used once a mission to alter the course of battle.”

This turn-based strategy title features a story written by Black Library author Ben Counter, so it will probably reflect the current lore–assuming there haven’t been any recent overhauls–and will definitely attract hardcore Warhammer fans. The mobile port will include the Heretek DLC, which adds five extra missions and invites players deeper into darkness as you face off against traitors in your own ranks.

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus will be available for iOS and Android at €12.99/ £11.99/ $11.99 on April 22nd
