Students and staff are also advised not to visit older persons or anyone with a chronic illness.

Students will be contacted Wednesday by their teacher for information about learning from home, said Hunter.

The length of the partial closure has not been decided, but parents should be prepared for in-person classes to be cancelled for two or more weeks, she said.

Five students at St. Joseph have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the board website that was updated Monday night.

On Oct. 9 the board’s daily update listed only one student at the school with COVID-19, but the additional students were identified over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Ottawa Catholic board has 32 people with COVID-19 at 17 schools.

In eight of those schools, there is only one person with an active case, while the remainder of schools have multiple cases.

The numbers fluctuate as cases are resolved. For example, two students were reported Tuesday as testing positive at All Saints High School, while St. Peter and St. Paul high schools and St.Kateri Tekakwitha elementary wereremoved from the board’s list of schools with active cases. At one point, Notre Dame High School had seven students with COVID-19 but currently only has one, according to the website.

Thirty per cent of the schools in Ottawa’s four boards now have an active case of COVID-19.

A total of 96 schools have people with COVID-19, with new cases reported Tuesday at W.E. Gowling, Queen Elizabeth and Barrhaven elementary schools; All Saints and Sir Robert Borden high schools; and the continuing education school in the French Catholic board. (The French public board had not yet reported Tuesday data by mid afternoon so that number may change.)

The decision to close a school is not based only on the number of people with COVID-19. Ottawa Public Health declares an outbreak when at least two people have tested positive and one probably contracted COVID-19 at school.

Ten schools in Ottawa had outbreak status as of Tuesday.
