Owen Hargreaves believes the Real Sociedad players were caught off guard by Daniel James and his pace as Manchester United romped to a 4-0 victory.

Bruno Fernandes scored either side of half-time, with Marcus Rashford and James also scoring for the visiting team in Turin.

It was a straightforward first leg for United, with Sociedad barely threatening Dean Henderson ‘s goal throughout the 90 minutes, and James added some gloss to the scoreline in injury time, picking up the ball on the right flank and streaking towards goal before slotting home.

“His pace, his willingness to run behind, I think the Sociedad defenders couldn’t believe how quick he was,” the ex-United midfielder said on BT Sport. “They probably thought they were going to catch him and in Spain, someone might square this or cross this, but he was too quick.

“I think Ole did great playing him, I think he was the perfect player. He knew Sociedad would have a lot of the ball, they played a high line so there will be space to run in, whether it’s Mason Greenwood – who probably had a really quiet game for his level. Bruno had an impact, Rashford had an impact and Dan James had an impact.

“You want your players to affect the game and I thought Dan James had a terrific game in many ways.  He tracks back a lot which I think is really important in Europe away from home. Credit to Ole, he got the plan perfect today.”

The 23-year-old was involved twice for United in their Champions League group campaign and it looks as if he could be a big part of Solskjaer ‘s Europa League plans.
