Canada’s new Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Action Plan is a significant step for the emerging technology’s potential place in the country’s energy grid, say stakeholders who are pushing the government to embrace “first-mover” advantage in the nascent domestic and international market.
The plan was released on Dec. 18, 2020 by Natural Resources Canada and builds off more than 50 recommendations made in a 2018 roadmap report, which outlined the steps that would need to be taken for Canada to build and deploy small modular reactors and potentially export them to other countries interested in moving from fossil fuels to a cleaner, base-load energy supply.

“The Small Modular Nuclear Reactor (SMR) Action Plan has been an expression of the incredible demand that there is across society and industry for small modular reactors as a clean, safe, affordable technology to meet our 2050 goals,” said John Gorman, president and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association, the trade association for the Canadian nuclear industry.
