Man found dead after homeless encampment fire in Toronto’s Corktown
A man is dead after a homeless encampment structure caught fire in Corktown Wednesday morning.
Toronto Fire and police got the call around 6 a.m. for a wooden structure that was ablaze at Orphans Green Park, near Adelaide and Power Sts.
Const. Edward Parks said they found one man dead inside the encampment.
“All we have right now is a structure that caught fire with a lot of insulation,” he said. “Right now, we have officers investigating on scene and the fire chief has put out that they’re investigating.”
Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell said crews quickly extinguished the fire.
“Currently, we’ve asked the Office of the Fire Marshal, our fire investigator and Toronto Police to look into the cause of the fire,” he said.
Fire Chief Matthew Pegg tweeted condolences to “the family, friends and all those impacted by this morning’s tragic fatal fire at Adelaide and Power Sts.,” confirming an investigation is underway.
