"He deserves it and I want it": Pep Guardiola addresses Sergio Aguero's lack of Man City minutes

Pep Guardiola has told Sergio Aguero to keep doing what he is doing to get the minutes that he deserves to play.

Manchester City’s club record scorer was an unused substitute again on Sunday as the Blues beat Arsenal 1-0 to win their 18th consecutive game in all competitions and keep their 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Aguero was last in action in the final minutes of their win over Chelsea at the beginning of January, while he has not started a match since October.

Guardiola is keen to bring him back into the fold, but has also been aware of how demanding recent matches have been; their last four league matches have been against teams that previously topped the table and on Tuesday they head to Budapest for the first leg of the Champions League last-16 game.

City’s manager insisted that the 32-year-old is doing everything he needs to to play, but lingering doubts about his fitness after a year out of the game are keeping him from being risked.

“I’m looking forward to putting him in the side,” he said.

“We cannot forget he was a long time injured and you only get rhythm by playing minutes but the games that we have had are so demanding.

“As soon as I can he will play because he deserves it and I want it. I want to say for him to keep working hard because his time is coming. I always have doubts about his physical condition because he was injured for a year. I want to be sure for him and for us.”
