Halo Infinite Isn’t Quite Open World

During a recent interview, associate creative director for Halo Infinite Paul Crocker stated that the game isn’t quite an open world, but it will feature expansive areas. Halo fans can also expect to be backtracking a bit through these worlds, perhaps teasing various perspectives of the planets. The worlds of Halo Infinite will apparently have plenty of areas to unlock as the plot unfolds and new things to discover off the beaten path. Halo Infinite will be releasing for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Windows PC later this year and it will be joining the extensive Game Pass lineup.

“It takes place in a huge world that is open and expansive,” said Paul Crocker. “We have a storyline that pulls you through it, which is effectively unlocking certain areas. But, as you progress through it, you have the ability to backtrack and explore to your heart’s content. There is a lot to find out in the world.” It’ll be interesting to see what 343 Industries has hidden off the beaten path for Halo fans to discover, but our key interest is in how large these areas in the campaign will be.

Talking about optional exploration might benefit the player, Head of design Jerry Hook said, “[Master] Chief, as he explores the ring, he’s gonna find more equipment. He’s always gonna find ways to upgrade that equipment. And, it’s not all about power, but it’s about options for the player. We want to ensure that players are able to make the choices to be successful in the way that they want to play the game.” After seeing the campaign demo during the recent Xbox game showcase, it’s not surprising to hear that Master Chief is going to have a vast arsenal in the latest installment in the legendary franchise.
