Say it is so Joe, you just signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It is so and nobody was happier about the acquisition of NHL legend Joe Thornton than Don Cherry.

“Yeah I love it,” the Coach said Saturday. “Yes he is 41 but I can tell you he can still play and help the Maple Leafs.”

Cherry said he has loved Thornton as a player since he saw him play for the Soo Greyhounds 25 years ago and he still appreciates the “honest” game he plays out there.

“I can tell you in Boston they always say that was the worst trade in Bruin history,” joked Cherry, who can be found talking hockey these days on his weekly Don Cherry’s Grapevine Podcast.

To get him now at $700,000 is a steal for the Maple Leafs.

“He can really help the younger players,” said Grapes. “But the secret is they have to play him. He can’t sit around. If Joe gets some ice team he will put up some points.”

He certainly has in his career. In his 1636 regular season games Thornton has scored 420 goals, added 1089 assists for 1509 points. He also has 31 goals and 102 assists in the playoffs.

“While it is true the Leafs are going from being one the youngest teams in the NHL to one of the oldest, I think Joe will add a lot to the team,” Cherry said.
