Gentrification Is America’s Best Hope

The word makes most people think of yuppies or hipsters taking over rundown urban neighborhoods, driving up property values and attracting upscale coffee shops. But “gentrification” takes many forms. I saw a different one in Tyrone, a borough of about 5,200 in central Pennsylvania.

Taking a look around, most visitors to Tyrone might say its heart is West 10th Street, home to Gardners candy shop and other independent outlets. Some lifelong residents would say the town’s core is the American Eagle Paper Mill along the creek,…
