First court appearance for man charged in death of Brandon Applegate
The man accused in the shooting death of 22-year-old youth advocate Brandon Applegate has made his first court appearance, charged with second-degree murder.
Appearing in Saskatoon provincial court by phone from jail on Thursday morning, Justin Troy Ballantyne, 30, was instructed not to have contact with two Crown witnesses while he is in custody.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
Ballantyne was arrested at a home in the 200 block of Avenue L South last week after Saskatoon police issued a public request for assistance in locating him in connection with the city’s 12th homicide of 2020.
Applegate was found lying in the intersection of Eight Street East and Clarence Avenue South around 7:20 a.m. on Oct. 4 after police received a report of an injured person inside an Eighth Street business.
An autopsy confirmed Applegate died from a gunshot wound. Police say the two men “were known to each other.”
