“Doesn’t mean he wasn’t good…but not for me”

Eddie Van Halen passed away last week at age 65 following a fight with cancer, and while fans and players around the globe mourned the loss of the late Van Halen icon, David Crosby was a little less sensitive when asked for thoughts on his fellow player.

Asked for his opinion on Van Halen by a follower on Twitter, Crosby was curt in simply replying, “Meh.”

Surely Crosby could have more positive things to say about an undeniable guitar innovator, from play style to patents. Testament axe man Alex Skolnick wrote in response, “I appreciate [Crosby] too much for this to get in the way, but a much better answer would have been: ‘I know he meant a lot to so many but his sound & style just weren’t my thing.’ He shared a memorial post from Patti Smith, showing that she still had kind things to say in spite of having “never been much of a VH fan either.”

Other Crosby critics, including Tracii Guns, were much less forgiving. “Wrong answer as fuck and rude as fuck!!! There are better ways to say you don’t care for someone’s music,” Guns wrote to Crosby. “That was very disrespectful. And yes straight out fuck you and your smug answer.”

Crosby would later return and try to clarify his comments in a series of posts, writing that he “just meant he does not move me much.”

“Hendrix changed the world of guitar. Nobody else really,” he wrote. “Look I get it ..many of you loved Van Halen….and the one time I met he was nice….and he was talented …meh to me means I don’t care that much….and I don’t…doesn’t mean he wasn’t good, he was but not for me.” Perhaps it’s best if Crosby sticks to rating people’s joint-rolling skills on Twitter instead.
