While Fans Can Look Forward to Monster Hunter Stories 2, That’s About It

Nintendo uploaded a Monster Hunter Direct on September 17th, announcing the release of Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. While fans eagerly await the two Switch-exclusive Monster Hunter titles, there has been some discussion about whether or not we will see the original Monster Hunter Stories make its ways to the Nintendo Switch.

Monster Hunter Stories is a spinoff series set in the Monster Hunter universe. Instead of slaying the world’s grandiose monsters to craft better armor and weapons, players will be able to befriend and train them to fight alongside you in battle. Think of it as a Pokémon-style game, set in the Monster Hunter universe. It’s more a traditional JRPG in both gameplay and story.

The first entry in the series, Monster Hunter Stories, released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, all the way back in 2016. It later saw a worldwide release in 2017 and an Android/iOS release a year later.

The announcement of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, has led to some fan speculation about a potential 3DS port, but unfortunately, Capcom has confirmed that they currently have no plans to bring the 3DS game to the latest Nintendo console.

In a recent interview, two of the series directors, Ryozo Tsujimoto and Yasunori Ichinose spoke about the franchise’s two upcoming titles. When asked about porting the original Monster Hunter Stories game, they stressed the fact that, while they have no plans to bring the original game over to the Switch, that the second entry in the series will not be a direct sequel and will feature a brand new protagonist and storyline. So, you don’t need to play Monster Hunter Stories to understand Monster Hunter Stories 2.

That being said, you might want to. While it’s a few years old, the game was very well received with our very own review giving it a score of 86. Check out our full review here.
