Britain’s Got Talent was 2020’s most complained about TV show, racking up more than 31,000 complaints to Ofcom.

The ITV talent show’s numbers were mainly driven by the furore surrounding Diversity’s Black Lives Matter dance.

That alone received more than 25,000 complaints last September as viewers lost their cool over the powerful statement made by the dance group at the beginning of the first live show.

Good Morning Britain came in second, with 11,000 complaints to Ofcom and ITV’s This Morning was third, according to a Freedom of Information request made by The Sun.

ITV stood by Ashley Banjo’s Diversity in the wake of their performance, saying at the time: “ITV stands by behind decision to broadcast Diversity’s performance on BGT.”

There was also fallout from finalist Nabil Abdulrashid’s stand-up routines which including material about race and religion and judge Alesha Dixon, who wore a BLM necklace.

This brought the total of complaints about the primetime show to Ofcom to 31,763.

Good Morning Britain also courted controversy with 2,000 complaints coming after Piers Morgan ripped into care minister Helen Whately for smiling while answering about the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The GMB host later apologised after he was labelled a bully for his takedown of the minister.

During 2020, there were 13,215 complaints made to Ofcom about Good Morning Britain.
