After Season 8 abruptly came to a halt last March, with houseguests finding out about the coronavirus pandemic during filming, Big Brother Canada has announced its return next month.

Season 9 on the homegrown version of the popular reality show will debut on Global on Wednesday, March 3.

Host and co-executive producer Arisa Cox announced the news in a tweet that read, “Big Brother Canada Season 9. March 3. That’s it. That’s the tweet.”

Season 8, which was suspended just weeks into airing last spring, wasn’t without controversy.

Toronto-based sales manager Nico Vera opted to self-evict himself from the competition in the premiere episode, calling the reality series, “a waste of time.”

“I’ve been miserable for four days straight and it’s pretty awful,” he said.

Then, in the series’ third week, warehouse worker Jamar Lee and electrician Kyle Rozendal were both ejected for their behaviour inside the house. Fellow houseguest, Vanessa Clements, also said Lee’s actions made her feel “uncomfortable.”

“We stand firmly behind this decision.” executive producer Erin Brock said at the time. “Aside from Kyle and Jamar’s evictions from the game I want to be really clear that moving forward, we will not tolerate any behaviour that we deem to be contrary to the spirit and integrity of Big Brother Canada.

The aborted eighth season included a variety contestants from across Canada, including a Markham-based mentalist, a lobster fisherman, a flight attendant from Montreal, a journalist from Kamloops, a wrestler from Ottawa, a teacher from Toronto and the game’s first Sikh player.

“With uncontended success and loyalty across the country, Big Brother Canada continues to reign as the ultimate social experiment delivering top-notch entertainment like none other,” Troy Reeb, EVP of Broadcast Networks at Corus Entertainment said in a statement. “With some of the most die-hard TV fans chomping at the bit for the next phase, Season 9 is set to entertain audiences and satisfy their #BBCAN craving.”

This season’s houseguests and the grand prize details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The new season will air three nights a week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday — with additional content available at BigBrotherCanada.ca.
