MOST ANTICIPATED OPEN CLASH AWAITS
Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams will meet for the fourth time today, facing off for a spot in the Australian Open women’s final.
The 39-year-old Williams continues her quest for a 24th grand slam singles title while 23-year-old Osaka is looking for her third major and second Australian Open.
Osaka and Williams’ most infamous match came in the 2018 US Open final, where a coaching violation for Williams quickly devolved into chaos after arguments with officials saw her lose the match.
During the trophy ceremony, which should’ve been a crowning moment for a young Osaka who had just won her first grand slam title, the upstart was left in tears as boos rang out in the stadium in protest against the result.
Osaka is the highest seed remaining (three) after Aussie hope and world number one Ash Barty was sent packing in the quarterfinals, while Williams is seeded 10th as she looks for an eighth title at Melbourne Park.
While Williams has looked in great form, Osaka enters with a sensational 19-match winning streak.
The winner will enter Saturday’s final as an overwhelming favourite against either 22nd seed Jennifer Brady or 25th seed Karolina Muchova.
