Australia has been swept aside in the first T20 International against New Zealand, losing by 53 runs in Christchurch in a poor start to the five-match series.

The tourists had the Black Caps struggling at 3-19 after four overs when Kane Williamson was out for just 12.

But a brilliant innings from Devon Conway rescued the innings, as the South African-born left-hander smashed 10 fours and three mighty sixes to finish on 99 not out off just 59 balls.

With help from Glenn Phillips (30) and Jimmy Neesham (26), the home side finished on 5-184 from their 20 overs.

Big Bash star Josh Philippe for his Australian team debut — but he, like his team as a whole, had a disappointing night at Hagley Oval.

Philippe came in after just five balls with the fall of skipper Aaron Finch for 1.

The Sydney Sixers opener was quickly back in the pavilion, however, caught by Conway off Trent Boult for 2.

The Australians crashed to 4-19 with the loss of Matthew Wade (12) and Glenn Maxwell (1),and they never really recovered.

Spinner Ish Sodhi was the best bowler for New Zealand, taking 4-xx including a caught and bowled to dismiss Marcus Stoinis (8).

Boult and Tim Southee each took two wickets, and Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Santner one each.

Late hitting from Jhye Richardson (11) and Adam Zampa (13) got Australia to 131, before Santner removed Richardson to end the game with 22 balls remaining.

The second game of the series will be held in Dunedin on Thursday.
