Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle LIVE! FA Cup result, latest news and reaction after Smith Rowe and Aubameyang goals

Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle LIVE! FA Cup result, latest news and reaction after Smith Rowe and Aubameyang goals

Emile Smith-Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in extra time as Mikel Arteta’s side began their FA Cup defence with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the third round at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Substitute Smith-Rowe was initially shown a straight red in added time at the end of 90 minutes by referee Chris Kavanagh for a tackle on Matthew Longstaff before it was downgraded to a yellow card following a VAR review.

The 20-year-old midfielder went on the score the opener as he latched on to a ball from substitute Alexandre Lacazette inside the box before slipping it past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Aubameyang also found the net – tucking home Kieran Tierney’s cutback – from close range in the final minutes of extra time to extend Arsenal’s winning run to four games in all competitions.

Emile Smith Rowe

Speaking to the BBC: “I was really happy, a bit of a relief. The incident before wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t intentional.

“[Newcastle were] very difficult. We knew how tough it was going to be, we knew we would get there in the end.”

It was not pretty, but a nice goal from Emile Smith Rowe brightened it a touch. Just a touch.

The holders into the hat for the fourth round.

27 mins:  Arsenal double their lead through Aubameyang. Tierney gets in behind and cuts back for the Gunners striker who taps home.

Simon Collings at The Emirates

“A big goal for Arsenal and Smith Rowe. His performance has deserved that too. He has been full of energy and running since he came on.”

19 mins: At last! Arsenal take the lead through Smith Rowe. Fine finish from the youngster. Saka lifts the ball to Lacazette who heads into the path of Smith Rowe and it is a fine finish into the far corner.

Last 15 minutes

16 mins: Off again and a couple of changes. Gayle and Lacazette both on.

Simon Collings at The Emirates

“Half-time in extra-time and still no goals. Arsenal in control now, though, and look the most likely to break the deadlock. Xhaka has been dominating the midfield since coming on.”

Half time in extra time

Still goalless, still rubbish.

11 mins: Saka races into the Newcastle box and looks to square it but Clark is there to stop the Gunners. Newcastle so good at the back tonight.

3 mins: What a hit from Xhaka and a great stop from Dubravka. The Gunners midfielder has a go first time on the volley and it’s tipped over for another Arsenal corner.
